Cat predation

Policy: PAC acknowledges that cats are natural predators, but believe it is important to also acknowledge that there are many related issues affecting predation which are sometimes overlooked.  PAC advocates the application of sensible basic controls to assist in the reduction of predation.

Background: The main causes for the decline in numbers of some mammals and birds are loss of habitat. Other key factors include road traffic accidents, intensive farming methods, building developments, and the increase in the use of pesticides. However, the PAC accepts that where there is pressure on a species from loss of habitat, then any other losses caused by, for example, predation, can have an effect on the population.

PAC members are working with organisations such as the Mammal Society and RSPB to try and minimise loss by providing information to cat owners on ways to protect birds and reduce hunting.
